PROJECTS

Each nine weeks students will be

assigned a project.  Information for

each project will be given to the students at the beginning of the

grading period.  Projects will count

as 25% of the student’s grade, so

please encourage your child to do

his/her best on these projects!

Project for 1st Nine Weeks

BOOK IN A …………………..

·      After reading your book, you will select a book report container.  The container can be a plastic bag, a manila envelope, a can, a shoebox, or anything else that might be appropriate for your book.  You will decorate your container to convey some of the major details, elements, or themes found in your book.

·      Contents of your container will be the following:

a.   Questions      You will write ten

                           questions based

on the book.  Five of the

                                      questions will be about

                                     general content.  Five other

                                     questions must require

                                     more thinking.

b.   Vocabulary    You will create a ten-word

                                      glossary of unfamiliar

                                     words from your book.

c.   Items            You will include five items

                           that have a connection to

                           the story.

·      The final part of the project is your presentation.  You will present your “Book in a …………” to the class.  You must explain the connection of the container to the story, tell about the five items you included, and then share information about three of the book’s literary elements – setting, characters, conflicts, climax, or resolution.

Project 2nd Nine Weeks

BIOGRAPHY CARD AND

POWERPOINT PRESENTATION

You will create a biography card for an

individual of your choosing.  Directions and

requirements for creating the card and the

presentation are below.  You will also use

the same information to create a

PowerPoint presentation about your

individual.

BIOGRAPHY CARD

(All biographical information can be found

on the internet.  I will be taking you to the

lab six (6) class periods to work on this.)

Things to include on the front of the card:

Ø  Picture of person you are researching

Ø  Name of person

Ø  Title or occupation of person

Things to include on the back of the card:

Ø  Date of birth and death

Ø  Family information – spouse, children

Ø  School or schools attended

Ø  Outstanding achievements and accomplishments

Instructions for typing the front of your card

(Be creative)

ü  Open a blank word document

ü  Go to page setup under file and

change margins to 1” on all sides

ü  Format your page for two (2) columns – Do this at top of page on menu bar

ü  Go the internet site that you found your biographical information

ü  Copy the picture you found on the internet to your blank word document – Do this by right clicking on picture and then choose copy

ü  Go into your word document and right click and hit paste

ü  Beside your picture write the individual’s name using Word Art

ü  Under your picture write the title or occupation using Word Art

Instructions for typing the back of your

card

ü  Using the same word document that you created for the front of your card, hit enter until you get to the top of the second column.  You will begin the back of your card at the top of column two (2).

ü  Type the words Birth, Death, Schools Attended, Occupation, Achievements in BOLD – Do this by hitting Ctrl B or hitting the B on the menu bar.  To turn bold off, use these same commands.   Example:  Birth:  April 4, 1919

     Death: September 22, 1950

ü  Type the information about your individual out from each heading

ü  You can use any font as long as it is easy to read.  Also, you can use any font color except yellow or white!  Be creative putting your information on the back.  Remember:  You want your card to be interesting and attractive so that others will want to read it!

Instructions for creating your

PowerPoint presentation

vOpen up a blank PowerPoint slide.

vYou can choose the type of layout you want for each slide.

vTo create a new slide, go to Insert on the menu bar and click on new slide.

vTo format background, go to Format on the menu bar and click format.

vSlide 1 must contain the individual’s picture, name, and occupation.  Basically the same information on the front of your biography card.

vSlide 2 must contain personal information such as date of birth, birthplace, name of parents, name of spouse, name of children, date and place of death.

vSlide 3 must contain information about education of your individual

vSlides 4 & 5 must contain achievements and accomplishments of your individual.

Any of these slides can contain pictures

if they apply to that slide!

Project for 3rd Nine Weeks

The project for this nine weeks is a

student-created anthology, or

collection of poems.  The students

will work in groups to compose their

own anthology.  They will be given

time in class to work on this.  They

will also be going to the computer lab

to type their final drafts. The

following is a list of the types of

poems that will be

included in their anthologies:

Couplet         Quatrain       Haiku Cinquain

Diamante      Acrostic        Limerick Picture

I Am              Poem by any poet

Project 4th Nine Weeks

Picture Book

You and your group will be creating

your own picture book.

It must be about our Appalachian

culture.

The book must have a front and back

cover.   BE CREATIVE and

COLORFUL!

Your book must contain pictures on

every page – this is a PICTURE book!

Your book must tell a story – It must

have a beginning, a middle, and an

end.  It needs to have a plot.  It can

teach a lesson or tell how characters

live and relate to one another.  I do

not want a SENSELESS story (one

that doesn’t tell the reader anything)!

READING JOURNALS

Each day the students will begin my

Class by reading a page in the reading

                           journal and answering questions

about the reading selection.  We will

                           grade each selection every day,

however, I will only record one of

these grades each week.  The

students will not know which

selection I will take for a grade.

Hopefully, this will encourage them

to do their best each day.

VOCABULARY

Each day the students will be given

                           vocabulary words and their

definitions that they will write in

their journals.  Every other Friday

they will have a vocabulary quiz on

these words.  They will be able to use

their journals on these quizzes, so

this should be an easy 100 quiz

                           grade!

Spelling

Every other Friday the students will

go over specific spelling rules and

                           complete assignments pertaining to
