Text Box: What is a School Health Coordinator?

A School Health Coordinator is like a system wide counselor, administrator, and supervisor.   The purpose of Coordinated School Health is to join together health and wellness services with education.

Through the coordinated efforts of those within the schools together with the students, their families, and those in the community, the students not only increase their aptitude for learning, but can also learn ways to improve their overall health. Some things that may be accomplished by this can be:

§	A reduction in absenteeism
§	Less behavior problems in the classroom
§	An improvement in classroom performance
§	A student who is more prepared to be a productive member of the community.
The Eight (8) Components of School Health are

1) Comprehensive Pre K - 12 Health Education
2) Comprehensive Pre K - 12 Physical Education
3) School Health Services
4) School Nutrition
5) School Counseling, Psychological, and Social Services
6) Healthy School-Safe School Environment
7) Student/Staff Health Promotion
8) Family and Community Involvement in School Health

Legally, we have to do certain surveys and assess the data.  We are to follow federal and state wellness policies.  We are to follow the Child Nutrition, Vending, and Physical Activity laws.

I am looking forward to working with everyone in this capacity as we all work together to improve the lives of our students.

Thank you,

Rick Harper
