Text Box: Ben Garrett, editor of the Independent Herald, spoke with the journalism class on Wednesday, August 29. Mr. Garrett shared his knowledge of the workings of a newspaper through a question and answer session. Students were interested in the interview process as well as getting started setting up a school newspaper. He also helped the students get started using InDesign software which is the software that most newspapers use. The journalism students enjoyed Mr. Garrett’s visit and feel more confident using the software. They also look forward to starting the school newspaper.

Text Box: Best Buddies is a service learning program. In this club, high school students are paired with elementary students who can benefit from the “extra attention” that Big Best Buddies can provide. All elementary teachers submit referrals for students to be in the Best Buddies program. The popularity of the program has led to an overwhelming waiting list to be both a Big and Little Buddy. Big Best Buddies and Little Best Buddies participate in lots of fun group activities throughout the year. High school students also visit the elementary school twice each month to have “bonding time” with their Little Buddies. A major benefit of the program is an increase in the self-esteem of both the Big and Little Best Buddies. Through raised self-esteem the students can better adapt and overcome whatever difficult situations life may send their way. It is the philosophy of Best Buddies’ sponsors

High school Best Buddies is sponsored by Michelle Bridges and Rhonda Laxton. The elementary sponsors are Jann Lewis and Jonnie Lewis. Many local community clubs and businesses help support the Best Buddies program. However, we are always searching for additional support. We are proud of our Best Buddies program and its success!!!
