Dear Students (and
Parents/Guardians),
Congratulations! You’ve made it to the 8th grade! I hope you have had a wonderful summer. I’m sure most of you are not ready for summer
to be over yet. However, the beginning
of school is near, and it is time to get ready for it. I will be your English teacher this
year. I hope to have a great year with
you. Behavior guidelines in my classroom
are pretty simple: I expect you to
behave appropriately! Consequences will
correspond with the Oneida Middle School Handbook. My main expectations are below:
BE
RESPECTFUL
Be
prompt (on time)
Be polite (nice and respectful)
Be
prepared (always ready to work)
Be
productive (work hard and finish all assignments)
All of
this and many other pieces of information will be discussed when school starts
and throughout the year. I’m looking
forward to seeing you in August.
***I would like for each
student to have 2 folders for my class.
I would like for them to have the folders that have 3 prongs and 2
pockets. The folders will need paper in
them because they will be used for journals and daily work. Students can buy them before school starts,
or they can wait and buy them from me during class.***
Below is a description of how the students will be graded
in my class.
25% Journal: Students will keep a journal
folder in my class at all times. They
will have journal entries to complete almost everyday. I will give them a topic, and they will have
to write a complete paragraph expressing their thoughts on the topic of the
day. This should be an easy grade. If they complete each journal entry, and it
is on topic and in paragraph form, they will have a 100 for 25% of their final
grade for the 9 weeks.
25% Homework/Daily Work: Students will keep a
homework folder in my class. It will
contain all of the assignments that they complete in English. Some of the work will be finished in class,
but some days there will be homework for them to bring in the next day. Their graded work will be put into this
folder along with a grade sheet. The
students will always be able to look in their folder to see what their homework
grade is.
25% Tests/Quizzes: We will be having regular
quizzes and tests throughout the 9 weeks.
These grades will combine for 25% of the final grade. Some quizzes will be announced, while others
may be surprises. Tests will always be
announced ahead of time.
25% Projects: Students will do one project each
9-week period. This will account for the
last 25% of their grade. I will send
notes home about each project that will contain information about the
requirements and due dates. The students
and I will also talk about the projects in class. If a student returns their project letter
signed, it will earn them an extra 5 points on their project grade.
Below, I have included a place
for the parent/guardian signature and the student signature. I would like you to sign this and return the
bottom section. This will let me know
that the letter has been received and read by the students and their
parents/guardians. Thank you very much.
Sincerely,
Rebekah Sexton

Project #2
For the project for the 2nd 9 weeks, students will create a biography book for children. This project will count for 25% of the final grade for the nine weeks. If needed, I will take the students to the lab to research for their project, but most of the research can be found in the biography that the students can check out from me or the library. Students are allowed to work on and complete this project at home on their own time. This is advised if the student has access to a computer with the Internet. If not, I will help the student find time to work on this project at school.
After reading the book and collecting information, students
will create their own book, which will be a biography for children. Children’s books are easy to read and have
many pictures to go along with the words.
The biography will
somehow include:
The biography must
have:
The students will
have great flexibility in how they create their books and what they look
like. As long as all the above
requirements are met, the students are allowed to decide how everything looks.
All of this book should be done by hand, not computer. The writing will be in the students’ handwriting, and the pictures will be drawn by the individual student. I am not grading artwork. The pictures should be to the best of your ability and help the reader visualize what is happening in the text.
**A SAMPLE BOOK
WILL BE SHOWN TO THE CLASS.**
DUE DATE:
December 1, 2005 (or earlier for extra credit)
