GUIDELINES AND RULES FOR MS DELK’S SCIENCE CLASSES!!!

WELCOME!!!!

There are TWO things being taught in this class.  FIRST and foremost is the subject of BIOLOGY.  SECOND, (and in my opinion of equal importance) is RESPONSIBILITY.   YOU and ONLY YOU are responsible for the grade that you will earn in this class.  NO one else can “learn” this subject for you and no one else can “pass” this subject for you.  It could be that you are not ready to accept this responsibility at this time and would be better suited to taking this class at a later date.  In either case please remember: YOU ARE HERE TO WORK!!!

ONE REALLY GOOD REASON FOR GETTING GOOD GRADES AND PASSING THIS CLASS IS THE GATEWAY TEST.  Beginning with the school year 2001-2002, ALL students entering the 9th grade are required to take Biology I and pass an end of the year Gateway Test in Biology I.  This test will be given at the end of the school year.  Any student not meeting the minimum standard on the gateway test will not receive a high school diploma until the standards have been met.  Also, any student not meeting the minimum standards will more than likely be required to take the test again during the summer and/or participate in a researched based academic intervention until the standards can be met.  All interventions shall be designed to meet the individual student’s needs and shall be conducted by a teacher endorsed in the subject area.  At least one intervention must be offered during the regular school day.  This itself should be more than enough motivation to do well and learn in this class.

Listed below are the guidelines and rules you will need to learn and follow for this class throughout the year.  These will be in effect until otherwise told.  They are to be signed by you and your parents/guardians, stapled to the inside left-hand front cover of your notebook, and stay there throughout the entire year.

LEARN AND KNOW THE FOLLOWING . . .

(A)     GRADING

** Parents and/or guardians.  Each week the students will receive a

progress report by e-mail using the Think wave grading system.   You too can receive

this report by logging onto the Think wave web site using a password and key that comes

from me.   It is not necessary for you to have an e-mail account to gain access but you

will receive a more detailed report if you do.  (Most of the teachers are now using this site).

This password and key will be sent home sometime during the first few weeks in the form

of a letter.  The letter gives instructions on how to use this site.  This report will be sent to

you automatically if you give me your e-mail address at the beginning of the year.

Allowing me to use your e-mail address will make gaining access to progress

reports and any other pertinent information for class easier for you to gain access to.

This weekly report is designed to keep the student and you better informed of where they

stand with their grades.  This is in addition to the 41/2 mid nine weeks progress report.

**The 41/2 mid nine weeks report that is sent home with the student to be

signed by you and returned by the student for a 100 quiz grade.  This is an

excellent way to bring up grades.  It can also bring down grades if not signed and

and returned because it will count as a zero.

. . . Each nine weeks will be divided into some or all of the following categories: daily

grades, labs, quizzes, and test grades.

. . . Each category will count equally, for example: if during the first nine weeks all four

categories are used each one will count equally.  Daily grades will count 1/4, labs

1/4, and quizzes 1/4.  The second nine weeks may contain only three categories, i.e.,

daily 1/3, tests 1/3, and labs 1/3.  The third nine weeks may contain only two

      categories, i.e., daily ˝, and test ˝.

. . . It doesn’t matter what categories are used or how many during a nine weeks period,

only that they all count equally.  Therefore, ANY zeros or bad grades you receive

      WILL hurt your overall average.

(B)  TESTING

. . . If a test is being given, and the class has been told of the test several days in advance,

you will be expected to take the test on the day it is given even though you may have

been absent the day before.  For example: the class is told on Monday there will be a

test on Wednesday but you miss school on Tuesday, you are still expected to take the

test Wednesday.  (Exceptions can be made).  Have someone call to pickup

assignments and books on Tuesday if sick.

 (C)  EXTRA CREDIT

. . . There is NO extra credit!!!

. . . Each student will start each nine weeks period with an extra 10 points.  Five of the 10

points are given if the student does not cause or become a discipline problem and the

other five points are given if the student is NEVER tardy for class during a nine

      weeks period.

. . . The 10 points will be averaged into the students grades in the following manner; at

end of each nine weeks, each category listed above under grading is first averaged

separately.  If the student has not been tardy the entire nine weeks 5 points are added

onto the end of the test grade average.  Next, if the student has not caused or become

a disciple problem another 5 points is added onto the end of the daily grade average.

Then all of the categories are averaged together to get the total nine weeks average.

This system is a much better deal for you the student than extra credit would be

      anyway.

. . . There is one other way in which you can lose these ten points besides coming in tardy

or becoming a discipline problem.  IF you come to class without paper, writing

utensils, text book, or do not take notes for the day, or participate in class activities

one point will be deducted for each day that any of these occur.

(D)  HOMEWORK AND MAKEUP WORK

. . . ALL work is due on the date it is assigned!!  No late work will be accepted UNLESS

      you have an excused absence.

. . . IF you have an excused absence for one day, you will have one day in which to make

up the work that you missed.  If you miss three days that are excused you will have

three days to make up the work that you have missed.  However many days you miss

that are excused, you will have that many days to make up the missed work.

(Exceptions can be made but you must see the instructor on the day that you return to

      school).

. . . AFTER having been absent, one of the first things you should do AFTER having

gotten an admittance slip for class is to check the ASSIGNMENT BOARD AND

THE “MAIL-BOX” in order to pick up missed handouts and assignments.  NEXT,

you need to go to the instructor for clarification.  DO NOT RELY ON YOUR

“BUDDIES” TO TELL YOU WHAT YOU HAVE MISSED!!!

. . . IF YOU MISS SCHOOL ON A DAY THAT A LAB WAS DONE SEE THE

      INFORMATION UNDER SECTION F.

. . . MANY of the homework assignments include section review worksheets or study

guides that are numbered with the chapter number and section number.  These

worksheets normally consist of 10 to 12 either true or false, multiple choice, and/or

fill in the blank type questions on the front and on the backside are 2 to 6 short

answer or discussion questions.  Because of the type and nature of the worksheets, I

require that ALL short answer or discussion  questions be completed or else no credit

at all will be given for any of the questions.  This rule pertains only to these

worksheets unless told ahead of time with any other types of worksheets or

       homework.

. . . A GOOD WAY TO GET OUT OF HOMEWORK . . . AND WIN FREE

HOMEWORK PASSES!!!  If you make a grade of 90 or above consecutively on

any two of the section review worksheets (mentioned above) you get a FREE

homework pass.  This pass can be used to get you out of the next section review

worksheet or any section review worksheets for any of the chapters, as long as they

are used before the end of the SEMESTER.  (They do not carry over).  Also, you cannot

use a pass to get another pass.

Cheating will result in a zero for any work required in this class.

(E)  NOTEBOOKS

. . . Notebooks are required and are always due on the day of a chapter test.  Notebooks

WILL NOT be accepted at any other time.

. . .  Notebooks are to contain the following information: this set of guidelines and rules

SIGNED by you and your parents/guardians, (this counts 25% of the notebook grade

each and every time the notebook is turned in).

. . .  It should also contain outlines, notes (which count 50%), chapter questions, work-

sheets, or any other papers that pertain to the chapter that is currently being taught.

. . . Notebooks are to contain only the information on the chapter currently being taught

all other chapters are to be removed.

. . . Notebooks will count as a daily grade.

. . . Notebooks must be put in the proper type of folder (instructor will explain) and they

must BE IN ORDER or the notebooks WILL NOT BE GRADED!!

. . . Homework of any type that was not completed for the original assignment can be

completed and counted as part of the notebook grade.

. . . Notebooks are an excellent way to make an “easy” grade!!!

(F) LABS

. . . Throughout the year you will be involved in several different types of labs.  Each lab

will require its own unique rules although some rules are basic to ALL labs.  (These

      basic rules are attached).

. . . One major point that needs to be mentioned here is that in most labs you will be

working with a partner and/or group.  It is extremely important that you give some

time and thought to whom your partner/s will be.  Don’t pick someone just because

they are a good friend.  Pick someone who is at school all the time and most

important someone who will SHARE THE WORK responsibility with you.

. . . Lab grades are based on participation, following directions, handling equipment,

proper cleanup, and when applicable on WORKSHEETS that sometimes

      accompanies the labs.

. . . If you miss school on the day of a lab you must make arrangements to come in (while

the equipment is still out and available, if applicable) and make up the lab THE

      NEXT DAY!!!!

. . LABS MUST BE MADE UP DURING CHANNEL ONE TIME!!!!

(G) THINGS YOU CAN NOT DO!!!!     THE RULES!!!!

You can not . . .

. . . be excused to go the bathroom during class!!!  GO TO THE BATHROOM

      BEFORE CLASS HAS STARTED!!!

. . . eat, or drink food items in class

. . . be around or behind Ms Delk’s desk unless she is at her desk.  If she is at her desk

you can not be behind the desk unless you need to ask questions, or anything else

      pertaining to class.

. . . be in the storage areas behind Ms Delk’s desk for any reason what-so-ever unless

      she asks you to

. . . be excused to go anywhere else during class, i.e., another teacher’s room, gym,

      guidance office, etc.

. . . throw away paper in the desks, sinks, or drawers attached to the sinks.  There are

numerous waste baskets at various places - USE THEM!!!

. . . ask Ms Delk to loan you pens or pencils.  IT AIN’T GOIN, TA HAPPEN!!

. . . sharpen pencils and throw away paper during class.  This should be done before

and/or after class.  IN OTHER WORDS!  DON’T DO ANYTHING TO

      INTERRUPT CLASS!!!!

. . . get up out of your seat until the bell rings for class to be over, STAY SEATED!!

Push your stools in BEFORE you leave (6th period put stools up on the tables).

. . . do anything that will prevent the teacher from teaching or prevent you or the class

      from learning

. . . ask Ms Delk at the beginning of class or any other time “What are we going to do

today?!”  This will be explained to you at the end of the previous class or beginning

      of the current class.

. . . stick gum on or in the tables or on the stools.  The first piece of gum found anywhere

in this room (other than a trash can) will result in the class losing that privilege.

. . . do not write on the tables or stick things in the electrical outlets.  If you are caught

writing on the tables you will get to stay in during break and clean until ALL of them

      are clean.

. . . write in red or green ink OR any other bright colors, i.e., purple, orange, pink, etc.

(The only colors of ink you may write with in this class is black or blue).

. . . be tardy after a scheduled break between classes (this results in losing “extra-credit”

points and possibly writing a very long sentence several times).

. . . come to class not properly prepared, you will lose some of your 10 “extra credit”

      points

(H) MISC.

. . . Any type of behavior that results in disruption of the class or any other behavior that

the instructor deems as unnecessary could result in the student writing a very long

sentence any number of times and losing 5 of the 10 “extra credit” points.

You will begin writing sentences 10 times for the first offense, 50 more for the

second offense, and it will go up 50 more for each offense and for each day they are

      not turned in on time.

(Any disciplinary action that is handled inside the classroom could result in writing

sentences or the loss of break time).

. . . Things you need for class EVERYDAY; notebooks, textbook, paper, pencil or pen.

. . . DO NOT FOLD ANY PAPERS TO BE TURNED IN!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DO NOT STAPLE ANY PAPERS TO BE TURNED IN!!!!!!!!!!!!

. . . All you need to do is put your name and class period in the space provided or top

      left hand corner.

. . . When questions from the book have been assigned as homework, ALWAYS write

      out the questions.

. . . ONLY ONE copy of any handout will be given to you.  If you lose this one copy it is

your responsibility to make other arrangements or copies in the library.

. . . The back door of this lab will be locked at all times.  You may go out but not back in.

(I) SUBSTITUTE TEACHERS

. . . Only one thing will be said here, if you choose to give a substitute teacher anything

but respect and good behavior, you will be hurting the entire class as well as yourself

and YOU WILL lose 5 of your 10 “extra credit” points.  YOU WILL BE

PUNISHED IN CLASS AND TURNED INTO THE OFFICE FOR FURTHER

      DISCIPLINARY ACTION!!!!
