Mrs. Marlow’s Creative

Writing Class

Overview of Class

The Creative Writing Program involves students in grades 4-5. The primary purpose of this program is to teach students the writing skills they will need to master in order to pass the Tennessee Writing Assessment. This writing assessment tests each student’s ability to write a narrative story after being given a writing prompt.  This program also teaches the basics of the Writing Process which are: pre-writing, drafting, revising,  proofreading,  and publishing.

Schedule:

Students come to class on an alternating schedule with two-week intervals in my lab, and two weeks in the typing lab.  For example, whichever grade level, 4th or 5th, that is in my lab for two weeks, then the other grade level will be in Typing Lab that same two weeks.

Tribe Pride Facts:

ü     *         We are very proud of our students and our Writing Assessment Scores.  Before the program began, only four percent of our elementary students were passing the Tennessee Writing Assessment.  Our students of 2002-2003 received a 4 point (A) on this Writing Assessment in the Governor’s Report Card.   The 2003-2004 students scored 4.2   on the Writing Assessment.

ü   *       Twelve of our students have won national contests and had their writings published in hardback books.

ü *             In the past a school newspaper, the Elementary Connection, was published every six weeks by our 4th and 5th graders in an After School Program called Creative Journalism.

ü     *         The dedication of our students, as well as the support of our parents and administration, has been deciding factors in these accomplishments.
