Outline
1
Biomes
  • A look at biomes of the world
2
Desert
  • Hot (day) Cold (night)
  • Very little rainfall
  • Animals adapted to extreme temperatures & lack of water
3
Rainforest
  • Lots of rain
  • Many plant & animal species
  • A Temperate rainforest is cooler than a Tropical rainforest
4
Deciduous forest
  • Moderate Temperatures
  • Trees lose leaves & grow new ones
  • 50 cm of rain or more per year
  • Migrating or hibernating animals
5
Grasslands  (Prairie)
  • Moderate temperatures
  • 25-75 cm of rainfall per year
  • Home of large grazing animals
  • This picture is a Savanna
6
Taiga (Boreal Forest)
  • Cool
  • Cone Bearing Evergreen Trees
  • Harsh Winters (Precipitation is often snow)
  • Animals have thick fur & more body fat

7
Tundra
  • Very Cold with permafrost
  • Essentially a frozen desert (little rainfall)
  • Few plants & thickly furred animals
8
Mountains
  • High Elevations
  • Cold at peaks
  • Has characteristics of different biomes that change as you go up or down the mountain.  (Warm at base cold at peak)
9
Pond/Lake
  • Non-moving fresh water
  • Algae
  • A few plants
  • Freshwater fish
10
Estuaries
  • Place where salt & fresh water meet
  • Huge animal breeding ground
11
Rivers/Streams
  • Moving water (fresh)
  • More constant temperatures
  • Fish larger & more streamlined than in pond/lakes.
12
Ocean
  • Intertidal Zone – temperature changes, pounding waves, water meets air.
  • Neritic Zone- shallow water along coasts, few plants, coral reefs (warm), schooling fish
  • Surface Zone- no plants (algae), open water, large fish & whales.
  • Deep Zone- Dark, has bizarre animals that often have bioluminescence.
