Oneida Receives Reading Grant
Oneida Elementary School
Posted On: Monday, June 13, 2016

Last month, the Tennessee Department of Education and 16 reviewers selected 12 summer reading programs across the state of Tennessee to receive Read to Be Ready Grants for summer programs.  The grants were funded by a million dollar donation from the Dollar General Foundation.  224 applicants applied for the funds.  The grant will begin on July 5th and run for four weeks.  This grant will help to establish a home literacy environment.  Students will be provided with a beginning home library of books, as well as reading and writing activities that families can participate in together.  Students will be provided instruction specific to their learning level and area of need.  Students will read a variety of fiction and nonfiction texts based on their own interest and choices.  Families and student will connect text and literacy activities to real life experiences through field trips to local areas.  With the help of Read to Be Ready Grant, we hope this is a summer to remember for all students and families involved as well as the beginning of many great success stories!  If you have any questions regarding the summer reading program, please contact Mrs. Denise May, Ed.S., Reading Specialist at 423-569-8340.
