Dear Parents
& Students,
I would like to
welcome your and your child to my math class! I am really looking forward to having
your child in class this year.
Your child’s
grade each nine weeks will consist of homework, quizzes, and tests. The homework will count 30 percent,
quizzes will count 30 percent, and tests will count 40 percent of their
grade. The students will grade the
majority of their own homework in class.
Students will then be given an opportunity to make corrections (if they
wish). Therefore, no student should
get less than a 100 on most of their homework assignments. On the Saxon part of their tests, I give
students Test Form A as a study guide and Test Form B as the test. This way student will know exactly what
type of problems will be on the test.
On the
connected math part of the class, students should have excellent notes to do
their homework because I will do every bit of the problem and follow-up in class
with them. When we get finished
with each investigation, I will collect students’ notebooks and will be only
grading their problem and follow-ups (which will count as a quiz). I will give them a study guide for the
connected math tests as well. Math
Reflections are graded as follow (25 points for each of the following): answer must be written in paragraph
form, must have at least 5 sentences in their answer, question & answer must
be written neatly (they may be typed), and answer must address the
topic.
In order for
class to run smoothly, I have listed classroom rules on the bottom of this page
that your child will be expected to follow and consequences, if not
followed. Misbehavior for a
substitute teacher will result in an after-school referral and a written
assignment. This copy must be
signed by you and your child and returned to me at the beginning of the school
year (it will count as a test grade).
If this letter is not returned (with signatures), your child will stay in
break until it is returned and 10 points will be taken off of each day that it
is late. I am sending an extra copy
for you to keep at home. Your child
will be given one to put in their folder as well. Please do not buy folders until after
the first day of school. On the
first day, I will tell students what color and type of folder that they will
need to buy.
RULES
·
Be
prepared: Come to class ready to
work with paper and pencil.
Students have paper, pencil, and homework on their desk when the tardy
bell rings. (NOTE: Pens will NOT be allowed in my
classroom. USING A PEN COULD
RESULT IN A ZERO!!!)
·
Be on
time: Arrive to class on time and
be in your seat when the tardy bell rings with pencil already
sharpened.
·
Be
responsible: Keep up with all
assignments and notes. I will be
doing a folder check every so often.
Also remember that eighth graders do not have ZAP second
semester.
·
Be
respectful: Follow directions and
be respectful to classmates and teacher.
No talking when someone else is talking.
·
Be happy

Please feel
free to contact me at any time during the nine weeks if you have any
questions. My door is always open
for questions to the students (before & after school and during break). My goal is to see every student do well
in my class and leave my class loving math (or maybe at least liking
math).
If you would
like to receive an e-mail on your child’s progress once a week, please e-mail
me. During the first week of
school, I will be sending instructions home with your child on how you can get
access to your child’s grades online.
See you
soon,
Mrs. Kelly
